The Alahe’e is a stunning, medium-sized tree that grows 20-30 feet tall, with glossy green leaves and small, highly fragrant clusters of white flowers. Its natural growth pattern resembles a Christmas tree, making it a great substitute during the holidays!
Where It Grows: This native Hawaiian tree can be found in dry to moderate forests on all the main islands except Niʻihau and Kahoʻolawe.
Cultural Significance: Traditionally, Alahe’e wood was used to make tools like digging implements and adze handles. The leaves were also used to create black dye, and the fragrant flowers and fruit are often used in leis.
Fun Fact: The name Alahe’e means “slippery/wandering fragrance,” and it’s fitting because when this tree is in full bloom, it’s often covered in flowers, and you’ll smell its sweet scent before you even see it! It’s related to coffee and gardenia plants, bringing a touch of their charm to your landscape.
